The Manager, Academy is responsible for carrying out the Verbier Festival’s artist training mission, ensuring sound management of all aspects of the Verbier Festival Academy’s programmes for exceptional soloists, ensembles, singers and sound recording interns (hereafter called VFA programmes), as well collaboration with other members of the Academy/Orchestras teams in the coordination of alumni projects and communication with alumni.

The Manager, Academy reports directly to the Director, Academy & Unlimited (hereafter named Academy Director). He/she also works closely with the Festival’s Orchestras Manager (VFO and VFCO), the Junior Orchestra Manager (VFJO), the Artistic Administrator of Orchestras & Emerging Talent, seasonal Academy employees, and members of the Artistic team, including the Festival’s Founder & Director. Given the modest size of the permanent Verbier Festival team, he/she will regularly collaborate closely with colleagues across the organisation.

Planning, strategy, student recruitment

Working closely with the Academy Director, the VFA Manager:

  • Devises a wide range of training activities for approximately 60 Academy musicians each summer and then manages the array of masterclasses, professional development workshops, performances and networking opportunities made available
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with music schools/conservatories, artists/teachers, agents/managers, broadcasters/journalists, festivals/presenters, orchestras and other advisors in order to actively recruit programme candidates and assist programme alumni
  • Identifies and recruits an exceptional roster of masterclass teachers, coaches and coordinators who maintain the Academy’s reputation of excellence, and takes the lead on communicating with faculty and faculty representatives once they have been confirmed
  • Establishes and renews candidate requirements and then, in collaboration with the Manager of Orchestras, oversees the recruitment and application process for all VFA musicians, from application design, marketing listings for promotion and fielding questions from all candidates
  • Selects expert applicant reviewers/music advisors as needed
  • Identifies opportunities and feasibility for the presentation of VFA activities for recruitment purposes and to galvanize the VFA alumni (i.e. masterclasses, workshops, performances) in strategic markets (strategic for recruitment; fundraising and Festival ticket sales)
  • Establishes and maintains budgets for VFA programmes


  • Communicates and, in collaboration with the Academy Director and Unlimited team, offers opportunities to alumni throughout the year (e.g. UNLTD Collective, cultural engagement programmes, Friends Christmas concert, Schloss Elmau, etc.)
  • Monitors the Academy section of the Festival’s website, ensuring information is always current; suggesting content to the Communications team and writing content as needed
  • Ensures that alumni successes are communicated through VF communication channels, including the website, and social media
  • Prepares the VFA Official Programme Book, in collaboration with the Communications team, for each summer, including the writing and editing of student and faculty biographies
  • Establishes and maintains an efficient communication with students during the summer programme (i.e. through whatsapp groups or partner platforms like Classeek)


  • Works closely with the Academy Director in fundraising efforts to support the activities of the Academy, including writing of foundation grants and reports and recruitment and stewardship of Academy scholarship donors, in collaboration with The Friends of the Verbier Festival management


  • Manages all day-to-day activities of VFA programmes in close collaboration with the Academy Director
  • Coordination of all logistics related to VFA programmes, including:
    • venue bookings and contracts
    • collection of information and repertoire from students
    • scheduling all VFA classes, rehearsals, workshops, concerts and entering accurately in the Festival’s scheduling system
    • preparation and administration of all student, teacher, coach, coordinator, speaker and guest contracts, including visa invitation letters
    • housing coordination
    • some travel bookings and local transfers for students, faculty and programme coordinators
    • organisation of student practice room booking and scheduling system each summer

Student relations

  • Advises students on their career paths where possible
  • Encourages Academy students to embrace the Festival spirit / encourage them to attend concerts, rehearsals, masterclasses outside their own discipline and to take part in Unlimited performances/activities throughout the Festival


  • Works collaboratively with a small permanent staff year-round
  • Leads all Soloist & Ensembles programme activities and delegate the coordination of the Atelier Lyrique to Summer Atelier Lyrique Manager
  • Supervises and works collaboratively with a small VFA logistics team
  • Together with colleagues in Academy team, designates a member of the team to introduce each Soloists & Ensembles Programme masterclass and other events as required
  • Works with members of the Academy & Unlimited team to achieve any other tasks that may be reasonably requested
